SCV - Who We Are

Who We Are

The Sons of Confederate Veterans

Col. Hiram Parks Bell Camp 1642 - Cumming, Georgia

We are a historical organization. Founded in 1896, the Sons of Confederate Veterans is the legal, genealogical, and spiritual successor to the United Confederate Veterans and the United Sons of Confederate Veterans.

We are a patriotic organization. We are loyal Americans who pledge allegiance to the United States Flag while at the same time saluting the Confederate Flag. The SCV membership initiation oath begins: “I pledge allegiance to the United States of America and to its Constitution and promise to defend it against all enemies.” The issue of secession was settled over 140 years ago. We honor all American Veterans from all wars.

We are an educational and benevolent organization. The Sons of Confederate Veterans is a heritage organization whose purpose is to honor the memory of our Confederate forefathers, tell their story and remember their sacrifices in attempting to create a new nation true to the principles of the founding fathers of the American Republic. We are dedicated to the presentation of true history and the preservation of the honor of the Confederate soldier.

We are a non-political organization although we, individually, may have very strong political opinions. The SCV Organization Affiliation Policy says, “The discussion of matters that pertain to a political party, whether specifically identified or by implication, will be strictly prohibited during meetings of the SCV.”

We are a non-racial organization. We do not discriminate. Membership is open to all male descendents of any veteran who served honorably in the Confederate Armed Forces. The first Jew to hold a cabinet office in America was Judah P. Benjamin, who served at different times as Attorney General, Secretary of State, and Secretary of War of the Confederate States. A Cherokee Indian, Brigadier General Stand Watie, commanded the last Confederate brigade to surrender. Color Sergeant George Dance, a free black who volunteered to fight for the Confederacy, was rewarded for his bravery on the field of battle. Mexican Santos Benavides was a Confederate colonel who commanded the 33rd Texas Cavalry, a Mexican-American unit.

We are a non-sectarian organization. We are not a religious organization although most of our members, like our Confederate ancestors, are Christians.

We are a fraternal organization. “We are a band of brothers and native to the soil.” From: The Bonnie Blue Flag Song.

We are a non-sectional organization. There are Sons of Confederate Veterans camps all over the United States and some even in other countries.

We consider the Confederate Battle Flag to be a sacred object and deplore its misuse by hate groups, racist groups, and other anti-American groups.

Our meetings are open to the public. Those persons interested in learning more about the South and its history are welcome to attend.
